Crystal Commodore 64

I have a confession to make – I find beauty in old retro computer hardware like the Commodore 64… I therefore find it very discouraging spending numerous hours making everything nice a neat on a C64 motherboard or a MechBoard64 keyboard and then havnig to hide everything inside a non-transparent plastic case. Fortunately, there is a solution to overcome this! Retro Fuzion (link) also offer their nice Commodore 64 breadbox cases in crystal clear plastic. Combing the clear case (link) with the clear MechBoard64 prototype (link) and the transparent keycaps (link), it was possible to make an entirely transparent Commodore 64.

I grapped the closest working all orignal C64 machine I could find (Assy 250407 Rev B, link), released the motherboard from the old yellowed case and used that for the Crystal Commodore 64

The build did not take very long as it was simply a matter of fastening the keyboard and motherboard to the crystal breadbox case. The Clear MechBoard64 came with a universal rainbow cable that suits both long boards and short board motherboards. However, it was a little long for the long board in my opinion. I therefore found a shorter one in my spares box… We wanna keep things nice and clean, tight?

After the assembly it was time for a photo shoot. Enjoy!

When turned on, the dim white LEDs under the keycaps eluminates the keyboard beautifully. This should make it quite easy to hit the right keys during some late night typing. The Shift Lock has a green LED when activated. Beautiful!

The final machine is now used as my main machine in the man cave. Nice!

  1. You had me really worried there for a bit; for a few weeks I was getting errors when trying to load your website and I wondered if I’d ever regain access to your excellent tutorials. Really great to see you up and running again and posting again.

  2. Hi there, thanks for your nice comment. I am really happy to be back! He he… Yes, leaving a homesite unattended for several years is bound to go wrong at some point. I had a plug-in that made my site crash. It should all be working again 🙂
